Mood: party time!
Topic: "Faux les Bas" (2)
The Superdome reopens tonight; reportedly some tickets have sold for more than $1000. The City of Orleans will never pass up an opportunity to celebrate, and this football game between the Atlanta Falcons and the New Orleans Saints, the first game played in the SuperDome since Katrina, will be treated as one more reason to party. Frodo will celebrate the spirit, but lament the reality that tightens its' grip on the psyche of our native land.
Already the proud citizens of Houston blame their rising crime rate on the emigrants from Louisiana. Already fiscal conservatives compute that the rebuilding cost will extend into the tens of thousands for every resident of Orleans Parish. Already the legal system finds reason to allege predmeditated murder against medical practitioners because people died under their care, far more serious than simple euthanasia. Already the national media look at the City of Orleans from Times Square, and not from the Ninth Ward.
Tonight, everyone will celebrate the "Re-birth," and then they will turn out the lights and they will go home. There will be another game, somewhere else, next Monday night. Frodo will stand in the darkness and listen to the sounds of people crying. Some are hungry. Some are without a place to live. Some have no job. Some, sad to say, aren't really there, it is just the sound of the breeze that blows off the river today, as it did when slaves were sold on its shore. Too many will turn off their TV's this evening, and think that things are all back to normal.
George W. Bush will sleep through it all, because it is past his bedtime. Frodo supposes that what we get, is what we asked for.
